Picnic

We enjoyed a day trip to Wrights Watergardens & Glenbrook Vintage railway ride on 17th December 2016. Nearly 100 members joined us on this trip.

The Wright Watergardens are built around the historic Mauku Waterfall and stream in Putumahoe. It’s about an hour drive from Auckland. During the 1800s, a huge waterwheel was located at the top of the waterfall which powered the flax mill built beside it. Once dismantled, the area became a favourite picnic spot. After the Second World War, the land was turned into a rock quarry which provided hard metal for the roads leading out to the local steel mill. After the quarry was abandoned, the area was covered with weeds and rubbish for several decades. The quarry has now been transformed into a 4-acre garden, beautiful in all seasons. It has ever-changing selections of trees, shrubs and native plants. Waterlilies, Iris and lotus all flourish these stunning gardens. The gardens have several levels; there are many walkways, bridges and ponds. The gardens have lots of places where you can stop and enjoy the beauty of nature. It’s an absolute stunning place and a unique experience.

We enjoyed an hour of Glenbrook vintage steam railway ride; it’s a 15 kilometer return trip to Victoria Avenue through beautiful countryside covered with preserved native bush to the historic harbour town of Waiuku, south west of Auckland. The authorities made excellent arrangements for our group. A newly restored parlour car was included which is not usually included in their train. They also arranged for the steam train to stop at their workshop on the way back from Waiuku and we had an opportunity to observe where they overhaul and restore locomotives. One of the authorised staff members explained in detail about all the activities at the workshop and its operating systems. It was a pleasant trip we all enjoyed a lot.
